Following the pathway of the previous releases of fr(HK), including <Radio Odyssey> and <Cycling Trail>, the group continue to explore the way to create similar musical structure using methods completely different from previous tryouts.
In <Fragmented Soundscape (From Social Media)>, fr(HK) captured soundscapes from scrolling the video reels in various social media, including Tiktok, Instagram, Facebook and Youtube. Videos of various natures created different sound, and when these videos were scrolled continuously, a stream of sound college is formed, like the sound streams in <Radio Odyssey>, or the come-and-go sound fragment captured in a bicycle trail in <Cycling Trails>. However, unlike the previous two albums, the sound fragments in <Fragmented Soundscape (From Social Media)> come continuously, instead of being scattered in the ocean of white noise.
Special effects were added in post-production, making the kaleidoscopic soundscapes sound like a nostalgic 80’s vaporwave mix. Besides, by scrolling the same consecutive videos up and down continuously, a DJ scratching like effect is formed. (Please refer to the first track). However, the scratching materials, i.e. the videos, are generated from the algorithms of the social media apps, making the sound artist having limited control on the selection of raw sound sources. The only thing the sound artist can do is to control the degree of scrolling based on the random video sound chips he receive, and improvise based on it.
Let’s enter the patchwork of sound and get lost in social media!
