Experimental Oriental

In Chinese traditional theater music, “mini pieces” are small unit of music. In a play, mini pieces are concatenated together organically, creating the tone or mood of a particular scene of the play, or symbolizing a particular scenario or actions played by the actors.

“Experimental Oriental”, the sophomore release of Yoyogi Koen, is a project using Chinese traditional theater music to conduct sonic experiment. Several “mini pieces” samples are chosen, and are being “processed” in different ways via various decompose and recompose methods, forming unique soundscapes with hints of Chinese traditional theater music.

All mini-music samples in the album are obtained from Hong Kong Music Miniatures, and online project launched by The Gong Strikes One which offers free domain mini-music samples in their “Mini-Music Library”. It is the wish of the Hong Kong Music Miniatures project that their mini pieces can be adopted, rearranged and built up, while Yoyogi’s “Experimental Oriental” EP is an alternative way to achieve their goal.
