Input: Field Recording Field recording is made in a local restaurant. While John Cage’s 〈4’33”〉 questioned the role of ambiance sound in a piece of art work, our〈4’33”ed〉 uses ambiance sound as it’s source.
2.
Process I The sound source recorded is repeated three times, imitating and crediting the three “movements” of John Cage’s 〈4’33”〉.
3.
Process II Speed adjustment of the three parts was made, so as to make difference between different movements: 1st part- 25% of original speed; 2nd part- 50% of original speed; 3rd part- original speed. The duration of the track is then trimmed to 4’33”.
4.
Process IIIA The track is plugged into two different distortion amplifier plug-ins with different sound textures. This track is the first plug-in.
5.
Process IIIB The track is plugged into two different distortion amplifier plug-ins with different sound textures. This track is the second plug-in.
6.
Output: 〈4’33”ed〉 Tracks created in IIIA and IIIB are combined. One on left and one on right, forming the final output 〈4’33”ed〉, a harsh noise abstract track from daily found sound. Everything Music.

about

《4’33”ing》is an album celebrating the 1st anniversary of 433 Records, which was established in late March 2021.

After the release of《23:58:20》in early 2022, which explored and reviewed the role of an "album" and the role of a music platform (Bandcamp), 《4’33”ing》digs into the "I-P-O" process of music production, highlights the processing part and celebrates the PROCESS of music production in "-ing" form.

[Album Concept]
In most cases, artists would like to craft their work, make it perfect, then get the perfect version released. The intermediate process will hardly be shown and credited.

In 《4’33”ing》, the intermediate process is, however, highlighted and glorified. While the last track 〈4’33”ed〉(in past perfect tense, -ed form) is the final outcome of the crafting process, the first 5 tracks show the raw input from field recording/found sound, and how such found sound is processed (in -ing form) to form the outcome. In other word,〈4’33”ed〉is decomposed and the anatomy process was shown. An I-P-O (Input-Process-Output) structure is displayed.

The emphasis of intermediate processing steps is also a metaphor of the road our label paved last year.
