fr(HK), a.k.a. Field Recording Hong Kong 香港聲景, is a cultural side project by anonymous artist(s) in Hong Kong trying to capture sound via field recording in their home town for future generation, before the sound vanish permanently.

Their first release, Radio Odyssey, captured Hong Kong radio stations’ analogue AM and FM signals from a vintage mono radio, using traditional radio channel tuning method (scroll a wheel in the analogue radio, instead of tracing the channel automatically). Ambient/drone soundscape was then padded on top of the recorded signal, creating a detached atmosphere.

The "journey" begins from the lowest frequency in AM and FM spectrum (around 530kHz and 76 MHz respectively), to the highest frequency (around 1600kHz and 108 MHz respectively), like a unpredictable voyage /odyssey in the sea of soundwave. While most of the time the signal received is white noise like the endless audio ocean, the occasional channels discovered look like the small islands found in the middle of the voyage. Audible message was discovered, then abandoned shortly afterward, and the journey continued.

On the final track I was finishing the part in Call of Cthulhu where Johansen’s strange and horrific journey to R’lyeh is being recalled. It’s described as an ancient cyclopean city of non Euclidean geometry that no human could build. Angles and perspectives are constantly shifting.
