  • 中秋 Mid-Autumn: 8-Bit Music for Toy Lanterns (Floppy Disk)

The following items are stored in first hand (NOT recycle ones) 1.44MB 3.5’ DIY handmade floppy disk in random color:

    - Floppy version of the nine tracks.
    - A readme file introducing the album.
    - Album art.

    Extra physical items:
    - A traditional Chinese Mid-Autumn paper lantern from traditional toy store, in random shape and color. (handle and candle not included due to potential shipping issues).
    - Dotted napkin paper for wrapping the floppy and lantern (originally used as napkin for Mid-Autumn feast).

The following are the steps for setting up the lantern:
    1. The cross-shaped (+ shape) metallic part is the base/cradle for holding the candle. Light a candle, put the candle on the cross-shaped base vertically, then fold the four arms of the metallic cross so that they can grip the candle. (skip this part if you are not going to deal with candle)

    2. Expand the lantern slowly and carefully by unfolding the paper to form a cylindrical-shaped lantern. If you have already lightened up a candle, be extremely careful not to burn the lantern. Remember: affix the lighted candle before expanding the lantern, NOT the other way round, or the lantern will catch fire easily.

    3. Use chopstick, stick or hard straw as the handle of the lantern. Put the handle across the copper wire, then rotate the lantern 180 degree so that the wire forms a loop.

    4. Enjoy!

***Note: the audio quality of the songs had been trimmed so as to fit in a 1.44 MB floppy disc. Track 9 onwards show the approximate sound quality of the floppy version.

about

The Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋 in Chinese, 月見 in Japanese, 秋夕/추석 in Korean), aka Mooncake Festival, is one of the most important festivals in Asian tradition. Believing that the moon is of its fullest size and the brightest all over the year, Chinese families celebrate / reunite on the 15th day of the eighth month of the Chinese lunar calendar (usually in September based on the Gregorian calendar), viewing the moon, eating moon cakes and playing lanterns together.

While traditional lanterns are made of paper and lightened up with candles, under the advancement of technology, plastic toy lanterns with light bulbs powered by batteries emerged in 80’s. These lanterns had been crafted into different figures inspired by both traditional and pop cultures, ranging from Moon Rabbit in Chinese Mythology to Sailor Moon in Japanese Animation. Plastic toy lanterns are usually bundled with a small circuit and a speaker, which generate 8-bit Lofi chip tune sounds. Once kids hear these sounds, they know that it’s time to put down their homework and play. Such chip tune sound then becomes memories of childhood heydays from generation to generation.

“中秋 Mid-Autumn:8-bit Music for Toy Lanterns”, a concept mini-album by Hong Kong producer Guan Wuji 關無忌, who tries to recapture these memories via writing virtual soundtracks and theme songs for toy lanterns. With the use of 8-bit sounds, some tracks simply imitate the time when a kid plays the lantern by changing the sound patterns, while some other tracks try to use the old school sound texture to do something a bit more complicated, which expresses a nostalgic feeling of the ‘good old days’.
